1. Purpose : Each website should have a mission statement. Before starting a website, promoter should know, why this site is being started. This statement will remind to promoter, if it is not meeting the goals.
2. Content: Content is the king. Without good content, nobody will come to your site, people does not visit your website to have a look at your fancy designs or to see useless stuff, flash advertisements etc.
3. Uniqueness: Why people will visit your website, if some other sites with better contents are already there. This is the key characteristic, your site must have a unique selling point.
4. Ease of Use: Make a website in such a manner that it is easily accessible and easy to use irrespective of platform, device. So also consider the points that all the people does not have the same browser and same screen resolution. So check your navigation and design from many devices. Now it is mobile era, so don’t ignore look of your site on wap browsers, iPhone, Opera Mini, native mobile browsers etc.
5. Simplicity: Don’t make make website that much complex that users have difficulty in navigation or in identifying the content and the advertisement. So apply KISS rule here.
6. Dynamism: If content of your site is not dynamic, then this is just like an e-book, which people download once.. Ask yourself why my intended visitor will again visit this site.
7. Identity: Your website must have a unique identity such as logo, name, keyword or punchline, so that people does not forget it easily. There should be something that can instantly remind user to your site. So keep your website name, punchline etc very easy to remember or unique.
8. Search Engine Optimization(SEO): What if your website have everything superb but nobody knows about this. So submit your website on search engines and optimize it for search engines. Nobody else will promote your website.
9. Honesty: If you want to make your website go a long way, then have honesty, respect copyright laws, avoid cut and past from other sites. If you have something from other source, give it due credit. Avoid spamming or selling email ids of your visitors, subscribers to spammers.
10 Fast and Light Weight: If your homepage size is 800 kb and load in 2 minute, understand that no body have that much patience. So keep your site light weight and its should be such that it can load key content first and may load additional content based on speed.
11. Dignity: Maintain dignity of your website. This is especially very important if this is your personal website, because that is reflection of your personality. So avoid posting and links to cheap dirty jokes, gaudy shayari and other cheap content.
There are such many points, if you really have all that in your website, I am sure that nothing can stop your website to be a big hit.
