WordPress Post Install CheckList

by MD on 2009/03/03

1. Login to Dashboard. default url for login is your-domain-name/wp-login.php e.g. my login url is http://reena.in/wp-login.php

2. Upgrade to latest wordpress version, if upgrade notification as shown below is there at the Dashboard

3. If you have problem in upgrade, set appropriate permissions through Hosting Control panel –> Manage Account –> Content –> File Manager –> Set permissions for both read write access.

4. After successful upgrade, goto Dashboard –> Settings –> General & Create Blog Title, Tagline, WordPress address (URL), Blog address (URL), E-mail address, Membership, Who can register, Timezone, Date Format, Time Format, Week Starts On etc.

5. Then set Permakins, to do this Goto Settings –> Permalinks and set it to Custom /%postname%/, so your url will be http://your-domain-name/post-name , this my favourite and simple permakins type.

6. Add new user, especially this is very important ifdefault user is admin, This is a major security risk buecause anybody can try this username with dictionary acctack as WordPress allow unlimited tries for login. So create other user and delete user “admin”, if it is there.

7. Install one click plugin updater using Plugins –> Add New, this immensly helps further activities, because using this we can install theme/ plugins directly from url.

8. Install theme of your choice and set theme options, if any

9. Import your posts and files, if this blog was hosted earlier elsewhere.

10. Install plugins you need

11. Create and set favicon for your site.

12. Edit about page of your website.

13. Remove Hello World post

14. Start Posting

1. Add yourself as Administrator by Users –> Add New. I don’t like the default admin name.

2. Now login as this new user and delete admin account ( Added Security ), as anybody can guess ‘admin’ as username.

3. Go to Settings –> General and set the following parameters

  • BlogTitle
  • Tagline
  • Allow users to register themselves ( if you wish to allow)
  • Set your timezone, date format to D M d, Y and time format to 24 hr.
  • Set Reading options.
  • max no of post to display etc.

4. If hosting with Godaddy then make your wp-content folder writable by Login –> Hosting –> Control Panel –> content –> file manager –> made directory wp-content writable by selecting it and opting for setting permissions to read/write and inherit this to children. This step is for installation of themes and plugins without any security issue.

5. GoTo Plugins page

  • Deleted Plugin Hello Dolly (I don’t like this)
  • Activate plugin Akismat (to combat spam on your site.)
  • Select Add New –> Browse Button –> address http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/one-click-plugin-updater.2.4.4.zip Installation of this plugin will help us immensly as we would be able to install plugin and themes directly from url, instead of downloading them first. If there is any problem, downloaded plugin updater from http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/one-click-plugin-updater/ and install it.

6. Go to Themes –> install a theme

Install it from http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/download/inove.1.2.3.zip

7. Set permalink type of your choice from Settings –> Permalinks

8. Go to Links –> Add, add any new link and delete all existing ones, you don’t need these.

9. Import posts and attachments. (if you are moving from your other blog)
